Your daily mindset battle is like solving a math problem… really.
Do you remember your first week in Algebra 1 class? I do.
I can remember evenings at the kitchen table, crying as I reworked math problems over and over because I kept messing up.
Every time it turned out that I was making mistakes on easy steps early on in the process of working out the solution. And it threw off the course of my solution.
It was so frustrating.
I was so upset because of a very basic principle about how math works.
If you miss something vital early on, it WILL impact the rest of the problem and your answer will be wrong.
Your mindset works according to a very similar principle.
If you accept something as “true” when it first comes to mind, but it’s really false, every step you take on that situation from that point forward will be negatively impacted.
For example:
If you are faced with a situation you’ve never been in before and you immediately say to yourself, “I can’t do this,” you’ve got the opportunity to either believe that statement as true, or to reject it as false.
The conclusion you come to at that beginning point of consideration will shape the way you handle everything related to it from that point forward.
Let’s say you accept the statement as true…
- You’ll begin to mentally list the reasons you can’t do it, to affirm your conclusion subconsciously.
- You’ll lose motivation to think of solutions to the problem.
- You’ll begin to feel afraid or discouraged by the solution (emotionally validating your statement).
- You’ll never even try to accomplish the task. You’ll give up before you start.
How do you build a habit of getting those “first steps” of considering a situation (or person, or statement, or opportunity, etc.) right?
You’ve got to learn how to safeguard yourself from making mindset conclusions or decisions that are incorrect (untrue), early on in the process.
You’ve got to grab every thought at the threshold of your mind.
It’s like making yourself the bouncer at the doorway of your mind. You deliberately and consciously check the “I.D.” of every thought that comes to your mind before you allow it to settle down and be at home.
If it’s truth, you allow it in. If it’s not truth, you kick it out. No, you kill it.
In this Periscope session I chat about the daily battle to keep a truth-based mindset, why it’s so hard, and how you can…
#1 – determine what is true, and
#2 – strengthen your ability to fight the battle daily.
This is a good one, even if I do say so myself.
